Re: smoky mountain vacation

Looks like a great week to me !! the smiles say it all. bet those elk won't be there in 3 weeks :rolf: they will be there, because it is in a national park where there is no hunting. it was kinda of disconcerting how unaffected by human presence all the animals in the park are. yes bryan that is my...

smoky mountain vacation

well my wife and daughter had a nice week in the smokies. they did a lot of the Gatlinburg tourist stuff while i fished and hiked the park. we got out together and did a little sightseeing in the park as a family too. http://i571.photobucket.com/albums/ss159/troutbum76photo/smoky009.jpg http://i571....

Re: Headin' to the mountains

all those baits are good but the difference in catching a trout on a fly, particularly one you tied yourself, is like the difference in shooting a deer with your compound or that pretty osage recurve. the only way i finally got good at fly fishing was when i started leaving the spinning rod and powe...

Re: Headin' to the mountains

most fly fishing books will have some mayfly identification guides, but i wouldn't worry too much about matching the hatch as pickings in high mountain streams are slim and the fish very opportunistic. the patterns i recommended are ones that will imitate many different species. concentrate on not a...

Re: Headin' to the mountains

remember that a good 30 foot cast is much more effective than a bad 60 foot cast. wilderness trout are very wary of predators so wear mute colors, and stalk the fish just like you would if you were bowhunting. avoid casting your shadow over where you intend to fish and false cast as little as possib...

i think that being still is the most important thing, but that said i think that the mossy oak and realtree patterns are way to dark. i have been busted sitting perfectly still in both of these, esp. mossy oak. i have set the same stand in natural gear and been looked through. would like to try asat...

osage layout

well at ojam i bought 2 osage staves that were less than perfect, hence the very low price. they were both eaten up with worm holes and one had a branch a couple of feet out from the end. well i cut the branch end off of one and ended up with 53 inch stave. to get past the worm holes which went down...

It was the best opening day in a long time. We roosted a group of birds Friday evening and set up on them before daylight Saturday morning. There were 2 gobblers and a jake roosted below me and 1 gobbler on the same level as I was. At first light the gobbler on my level started hammering away. He st...

Re: It's Getting Closer !

since all trout fishing here is tailwater fishing and the winters just don't compare i have often fished right through the winter. much smaller crowds and still good bwo and midges hatches. it is odd experience to step into a trout river with water temps in the high 40's and the water feels warm com...

Re: It's Getting Closer !

i have always fished here where there are no fishin seasons, but in my obsession with fly fishing i have read about season openers and just imagine the feelings you are having must be similar to how i feel near the begining of bow season! i have always wanted to fish for stealhead. you do much of th...
