I shouldn't be surprised as all of your work that I've seen is amazing. But this fowler will be something very special!

Re: CVA Kentucky pistol restock
You've basically built a custom pistol just as if you'd ordered each piece alone. From looking at the original pistol there is so much difference in what you've done just so far that there's no comparison. One thing about these imported factory guns that stands out, IMHO, is the barrels are surprisi...

I didn't know where to put this, so move it as you wish. Anyway, We moved from Va back in July to SE Maine. I have my lifetime hunt/fish license but it won't be until next season that I'll get to do any of either. Of course miracles do happen. I've already found a nearby gun club I'm about to join; ...

Well, I just now stepped in and can't remember what was going on on the day in question; probably nothing of any real importance. I do have a Mon, Wed and Fri itinerary and stay busy on those days. I keep Tuesday and Thursday for "recuperation" and Saturdays open for hunting and whatever. Sunday is ...

Re: The Patched Round Ball Challenge Hunt
Congratulations! Great story and a fine deer and elk. I hunt with nothing but round ball and and have found nothing wanting. My two farthest deer kills were with a couple of .50 flintlocks; right at 100 yards. I, too, have been impressed by the fact the entrance wound is almost always larger than th...

Thanks, Capt. For hunting here in Va I'll be using the smoothbore - I really like it - with 70 grains of 3F and a patched .600" ball. That load gives me 3-shot 50 yard groups under 3". Since I'll also be hunting in WV in Nov. it will be the .50 flintlock with the .45 for standby.

If the barrel was reinstalled firmly after you lapped the bore, it might just need 100 more rounds through it. If these two things are needed (or not needed), at least two variables can be put to rest.

Re: .36 caliber round balls
I cast everything I shoot, except shot, and this includes .36 ball. My Lee and my T/C mold both drop .350" ball. I load with a .022" - .024" patches; just a tad tight but clean and accurate. I've even tried hard (WW) lead in my .40 and found it performs well and loads as easily as soft lead ball. I ...

Re: Unpatched Round ball Through Smoothbore
My smoothbore is a .62 early American flinter. I load 2F powder, card and felt or fiber wad/.606" ball/card as one unit down the bore. At 50 yards I shot a centered 3 shot group of 2-1/2". Thinly patched, 3 shots did 1-3/4" but was several inches to the left. I've decided on the above bare ball load...

The prb is a lethal projectile for any deer or black bear hunting. I've killed many with a couple of .45s, three .50s and a .54. Never doubt that simple round lead ball. Congratulations on your first BP deer.

Re: New to sidelock questions
Welcome to the forum, gasloffer. A good place to start with most guns is a round ball .010" under bore size (.530") and a patch at least .015". You may find you want a thicker patch but you need to shoot a bit first.

I gave up trying to make up my own lube a long time ago. Nothing ever especially stood out and it's a lot of trouble especially since great lubes are so easy to come by. The best ones I've used and that allow unlimited shooting without wiping the bore are: spit, Hoppes #9 Plus BP lube and Black Solv...

I currently own two .45s. Most of the ML deer I've killed have been with these two rifles. Used was a .440 ball and a good charge of powder. I love the .45.
