Oklahoma Selfbow Society

Postby stillwaterselfbows » Sat Jan 31, 2009 9:33 pm

I wanted to let everyone know a group from Oklahoma and Kansas today formed a new organization named the Oklahoma Selfbow Society. This organization’s primary function, as stated in their mission statement, is “to pass on to interested individuals, the knowledge and skills involved in constructing and utilizing Primitive archery equipment”. This includes building selfbows, bamboo backed bows, primitive arrows and flint knapping. This group hosts an annual event called OJAM in March (see OJAM in Traditional Shoot and Events) and also promotes primitive archery by doing demonstrations at the Oklahoma Wildlife EXPO and other venues. This is simply our way of preserving our historical beginnings. If you are interested in supporting this organization send me a PM. Yours in archery - Tommy

Tommy,

I'm glad to be in as one of the charter members. I think it's going to be a great organization for anyone interested in primitive skills and primitive archery. I'm always amazed at the interest generated whenever an event like OJAM or the OK Wildlife Expo comes around. I can't think of a better way to get the whole family involved in a fun, outdoor related hobby.

Tommy, Glad to be in on the ground floor of an Organization dedicated to sharing its expertise in primitive archery with others. Over the years, through events like MoJam and OJam, many, many individuals have began a lifelong love affair with crafting primitive archery equipment. I think the OSS will become a model for other states and individuals interested in "Passing It On". Really looking forward to being an active member of OSS. Ralph

Shoot Robert, I was born in Tahlequah and migrated north where the whitetail are bigger and they still let me in. Besides we need a tarheel just to keep the jayhawk fans in line. Let me be the first to welcome you aboard. :D

Hey, guys.
I joined at OJAM this year and am still waiting to receive a membership card(?) in the mail. I tried to PM "raincrow" on here, but haven't heard back from him yet. I'd like to try to make it to the members' camp, but still not sure if I can afford it. I hope I can, cuz I have a bow that I started at OJAM (with help from John from Bear Creek), and I'd sure like to get her shootin' !
Thanks again for a great time at the last 2 OJAMs.

Tony, Terry has been a bit out of commission. I called him and he answered on the welcome thread. Membership card will be with him on Saturday at the Rendezvous, otherwise all the new cards will be in the mail around the 15th of June. Right now, he's trying to get the OSS Newsletter to press.
Hope you can make it to Perkins 7th through 9th. Ralph
