Early Missouri Bow & Arrow Deer Seasons

Postby Wade Phillips » Fri Feb 05, 2010 3:37 pm

My, how times and bow hunting have changed... Stumbled across this 62-year old article this morning...

From the October 1947 "Archery" magazine on page 26.

The 1946 bow and arrow deer season of 3-days was extended to 5-days in 1947.
The Deer Hunt was the main event of the year for the Missouri Bow Hunters.
There was a 7-target shoot the second eveing of the 5-day season at the local ball diamond.
The President requested the entire membership of the Missouri Bow Hunters to participate in the hunt...

very neat article. You don't happen to have the right-side of it do you? Interested in the BROADHEAD statement. Assuming it states the requirements or something.

Bryan - The advertisement on the right side is for Tecumseh Archery Co. You probably don't want to see a dozen arrows advertised with Zwickey broadheads for $10.50. My how times have changed.

The only information about the Missouri hunt is shown in the photograph.

Ken -

Yes, i find everything except what I am looking for...

Unfortunately, I have had no luck finding the item Trap asked me to find.

Could be the fellow was not a member of the NFAA and his name never appeared in "Archery".

Just found the Missouri deer season dates for 1953 in "Archery" October 1953, page 22

Wade you dig up some great stuff. Thanks

Missouri may have gotten a late start in archery deer hunting but we had a bunch of rabbits at one time.

This photo appeared on the cover of the October 1996 issue of the Missouri Conservationist magazine. It compliments an article inside the same issue titled 50 Years of Archery Deer Hunting, by Tom Cwynar.

Here's a link to the article http://mdc.mo.gov/conmag/1996/10/10.htm

It's a great article and some interesting facts are shared about the early bowhunting days in Missouri.

A couple of the bowmen in the photo are actually mentioned in the article. Can you name any of them? Sorry, but the article does not name them in order. I found that info somewhere else. I'll share the list tommorrow evening after I return from the UBM Banquet. I'll have the photo there and maybe stir up a little conversation with it. Hopefully, I'll learn a little more about the bowmen from some local historians.

I've been tasked to write an article for the Missouri Conservationist about early Missouri bowhunters, but my angle will have more of an emphasis on equipment used along the way. Here's another hint about one of the pictured bowmen. He was an archery equipment manufacturer here in Missouri. Who was he and can you spot him?

I'm pretty sure the photo credit goes to Paul Jeffries. Paul is also mentioned in the article and is one of the bowmen in the picture.

Cool Pic, Enjoy

The archers in the image I posted above are (left to right) Harry Weber (behind), Earl Hoyt (hand up), Jay Reeg, Jim Hillman, Ross Bristol, Paul Jeffries, Jack Compton (killed first deer in 1952) and Joe Hennessy (kneeling).

I met a few local Historians at the banquet yesterday and spent alot of time with them discussing the pioneers of Missouri's early bowhunting history. The research is just getting started. Wade your library of information and your willingness to find it and share it will be very helpful in tracking down a few more names. Thanks for your time, Sir.

In regards to equipment in the image I posted, what would you think Earl Hoyt's and Jack Compton's bows were made of? Steamed static-tipped Osage-orange or Hickory? I'm leaning towards Hickory just because of the mass in the limbs. My thoughts are that if that were Osage those draw weights would be pretty high. Make sense?
